Since 1890, heatwaves have killed more people (4555) in Australia than all other extreme weather events such as floods or bushfires combined.^[1]

Heather Lawson from enliven will speak about the health impact of longer periods of extreme heat on vulnerable groups in our community, particularly those who have recently migrated to Australia.

enliven is a health promoting charity which brings together health and community services organisations to work collaboratively to improve health and social wellbeing for vulnerable groups. Heather will speak about enliven's work on raising awareness of the risk and health impact of heatwaves in culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Dandenong. This project is now being extended to Casey and Cardinia and includes an educational focus, emergency/immediate response and affirmative action.

• safely manage and adapt to extreme heat
• advocate for action on the health impacts of climate change
• better understand extreme heat through the use of thermal imaging cameras to demonstrate the impact of different surfaces and vegetation on the temperature.

This important work has been possible through the generous support of the Lord Mayors Charitable Foundation and the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning. Project partners include the local governments of Greater Dandenong, Cardinia, Casey, Southern Migrant and Refugee Centre (SMRC) and Kooweerup Regional Health Service.
